About the event

Utilizing the False Edge: A Deep Dive into Marozzo’s Longsword

Most fencers rely almost exclusively on the true edge, leaving half of their sword’s potential untouched. In this workshop, instructor Zack Whitney introduces you to the filo falso (false edge)—the secret weapon of the 16th-century Bolognese tradition.

This isn't just about learning new "tricks"; it’s about expanding your fencing toolbox. We will break down three distinct applications of the back edge, focusing on the body mechanics and timing required to make these actions work in a live fight. Whether you are a novice looking for a solid foundation or an intermediate fencer looking to frustrate your opponents, this workshop will change how you view your blade.

What we will cover:

  • Defensive Fluidity: Turning a false-edge parry into an immediate counter-strike.

  • The "Beat" & Redouble: Opening lines of attack by striking the opponent's sword with the false edge.

  • The Leading Thrust: Using the back edge to guide your point home from unexpected angles.

Gear at a Glance

To get the most out of this workshop, please bring the following equipment:

  • Minimum Requirements (Technical Drills): Fencing mask, leather gloves, and a gorget. (loaners available)

  • Full Sparring Kit: If we move into uncooperative drills and "pressure testing" these techniques against an active opponent, a full tournament-grade kit (jacket, hard joint protection, etc.) will be required.

  • Weapon: A steel longsword (loaners available).

Your Coach: Zack Whitney

Zack’s HEMA journey began in 2014, but his love for the sword started long before. After picking up a longsword for the first time, he knew he’d found his life's passion. Over the last 12 years, Zack has become a pillar of the Pacific Northwest HEMA scene, including an eight-year tenure planning and running classes at Academia Duellatoria followed by his current role as a coach at IFG.

Zack spent several years as a "wandering combatant," honing his skills across different groups. Today, he specializes in Marozzo’s Opera Nova, bringing a decade of experience to his students through private lessons and workshops.
