About the event

Workshop Description

Fiore dei Liberi’s dagger section is widely regarded as one of the most robust and logically organized combat systems of the Renaissance. Contained within his seminal work, Fior di Battaglia (The Flower of Battle), is a sophisticated curriculum encompassing 9 Remedy Masters, dozens of specific plays, and their corresponding counters and contra-counters.

The Weapon of the Knight The rondel dagger was a specialized tool of the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Named for the iconic circular discs at the guard and pommel, it featured a stiff, triangular or diamond-shaped blade. Unlike modern tactical knives designed for slashing, the rondel was a dedicated thrusting weapon. It was engineered for the grim realities of combat: finding the gaps in plate armor, piercing chainmail, and controlling an opponent in close quarters. 🛡️

From Theory to Flow

In this workshop, we will deconstruct the mechanics of this brutal yet elegant system. We will explore the tradition through a dedicated Kata (form), practiced both solo and with a partner, designed to showcase the 9 Remedy Masters.

While the manual contains a vast array of techniques, our focus will be the foundational strategies of the First, Third, and Ninth Mastery plays.

Participants will learn:

  • 9 Master Flow Kata: Partnered kata form teaching the 9 dagger remedy masters contained with Fiore's system.

  • The Logic of the Remedy: How to intercept an attack and immediately stabilize the exchange.

  • Flow & Transition: Moving seamlessly between plays to find a disarm or a ligadura (lock). 🔗

  • The Mechanics of Structure: How to use your own body alignment to break and "own" the structure of the attacker.

What to Expect

This session is designed for those looking to deepen their understanding of historical grappling and weapon mechanics. Expect a focus on tactical body positioning, leverage, and the "Three Advantages" of structure, timing, and measure. Whether you are an experienced fencer or new to the Italian tradition, you will leave with a clear methodology for practicing Fiore’s dagger material at home or in the salle.

Equipment needed

Rondel Daggers (loaners available), gorget, forearm protectors (optional). We will not be utilizing masks for this workshop. Masks are required for any sparring before or after the workshop.
